Seasonal Dry Eye: How IPL Offers Long‑Term Relief

Why Seasonal Changes Can Trigger Dry Eye

Seasonal dry eye can become more noticeable when the weather shifts, allergens increase, or indoor heating and air conditioning affect the air around you. Many patients experience burning, redness, watering, blurry vision, or a gritty feeling that seems to come and go throughout the year. While drops may help temporarily, recurring symptoms often mean the tear film needs a closer look.

At Vision Best Eyecare, we take dry eye seriously because healthy tears are essential for clear, comfortable vision.

Dry Eye Is Not Always About Tear Quantity

Many cases of dry eye are linked to poor tear quality rather than simply not producing enough tears. A common cause is meibomian gland dysfunction, where the oil glands along the eyelids become clogged or inflamed. These glands help create the oily layer of the tear film, which keeps tears from evaporating too quickly.

When the oil layer is not working well, seasonal triggers can make symptoms worse and cause discomfort that keeps returning.

How IPL Helps Treat the Source

Intense Pulsed Light, or IPL, uses controlled light energy to help calm inflammation around the eyelids and support better meibomian gland function. At our office, we use Lumecca IPL as part of our approach to treating inflammatory dry eye, ocular rosacea, blepharitis, Demodex, and meibomian gland dysfunction.

By addressing inflammation and gland function, IPL can help improve the quality of the tear film rather than only masking symptoms.

Signs IPL May Be Right For You

IPL may be recommended when dry eye symptoms are persistent, seasonal, or tied to inflammation around the eyelids. During a dry eye evaluation, we look closely at your symptoms, tear quality, and eyelid health before recommending a treatment plan.

Common signs that may point to dry eye include:

  • Burning, stinging, or scratchy eyes
  • Redness or irritation
  • Watery eyes that still feel dry
  • Blurry or fluctuating vision
  • Light sensitivity
  • Discomfort with contact lenses
  • Symptoms that worsen with screen time, allergies, or seasonal changes

What To Expect During Treatment

IPL treatment is non-surgical and typically takes about 10 to 15 minutes per session. Ultrasound gel is applied to the treatment area, and patients may notice bright flashes of light during the session. Mild redness or warmth can happen afterward and usually improves quickly.

Many patients can return to normal daily activities after treatment. Some notice improvement after a couple of sessions, while the best results often develop after a series of treatments.

Longer-Term Relief Starts With Personalized Care

Seasonal dry eye can be frustrating when symptoms keep coming back. Our goal is to identify what is driving your discomfort and build a treatment plan that supports better long-term eye comfort. For some patients, that may include IPL, radiofrequency, lid hygiene, supplements, prescription drops, or other dry eye therapies.
